Route Weather browser extension · Last updated: October 25, 2026
Route Weather is a browser extension that shows a weather forecast along a route in the Komoot and Strava web planners. This policy covers data handling only; see the Disclaimer & Terms for the terms of use, the unofficial/non-affiliated notice, and the limitation of liability.
Summary
- No account, sign-in, session, token, or user identifier.
- No first-party backend. No Velosophic endpoint is contacted.
- No analytics, telemetry, crash reporting, advertising, affiliate links, or data sale.
- Route sample coordinates and optional elevation are sent only to Open-Meteo, only to fetch the forecast for the ride you are planning.
1. Data we handle
Route sample coordinates
To fetch a forecast, the extension derives the route already displayed in the planner and sends the coordinates of a bounded number of sample points along it. When the planner provides per-point elevation (Komoot does; Strava does not), that elevation is sent too. The request also carries the forecast time window and the weather variables needed by the panel.
The extension does not send the route name, waypoint names, user identity, device or installation identifiers, browsing history, or any data unrelated to the forecast.
Settings
Units, pace preferences, sampling interval, maximum samples, marker visibility, panel state and the disclaimer acknowledgement are stored in chrome.storage.local on your device. They are not transmitted anywhere.
2. What we do not do
- We do not create accounts or ask for an email address.
- We do not collect browsing history, keystrokes, or content from pages other than a supported planner.
- We do not use the Strava API, OAuth, tokens or credentials, and we do not save, edit or delete a Strava route or interact with Strava's social features.
- We do not sell or share data with third parties for advertising.
- We do not perform automated or bulk access to any website; the extension only observes the page you have open.
- We do not persist route geometry or weather as a history.
3. Forecast provider
Forecast requests go directly to Open-Meteo:
- API: api.open-meteo.com
- Provider terms: open-meteo.com/en/terms
- Data licence: CC BY 4.0
Open-Meteo receives the requested coordinates, optional elevation, the time window and the requested variables. It does not receive an account or device identifier from the extension. Please review the provider's own policy for how it handles request logs.
4. Retention
- Route and forecast data live only in memory while the planner page is open.
- The service worker keeps a normalised forecast cache for 15 minutes (maximum 12 entries) so that reopening the panel for the same route and departure does not make a new request. The cache is in memory and is discarded when the worker is terminated or the entry expires.
- Settings and the disclaimer acknowledgement remain on your device until you change them, clear extension storage, or uninstall the extension.
On update from a signed-in 1.x version, the extension removes legacy authentication keys and any old cached raster state.
5. Permissions
storage— local settings and disclaimer acknowledgement.https://*.komoot.com/*— read-only content scripts on the Komoot planner.https://*.strava.com/*— host access for the read-only Strava Route Builder integration.https://api.open-meteo.com/*— forecast requests from the service worker.
The extension does not request activeTab, tabs, scripting, or broad host access. It does not use the Strava API, OAuth, API tokens or stored credentials; a signed-in Strava session remains Strava's own session.
6. Children
The extension is not directed at children and does not knowingly collect personal data from anyone.
7. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy. A material change will be reflected in the date above and, where required, in the disclaimer acknowledgement version.
